Think about your audience: Introducing the Lusophone Technological wish list proposals
Wikimedia conducts an annual wish list survey where Wikimedia contributors make technological proposals for tools and platform improvements. The Lusophone Technological wish list proposals by the Wiki Movement Brazil (WMB) is an example of such proposals made in response to the wish list survey.
The creation of the list is related to the recommendations 2 and 9 of the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030, respectively Improve User Experience and Innovate in Free Knowledge. The list's objective is to integrate the Portuguese-speaking communities in a strategic and collaborative process that acts towards research and identification of technological bottlenecks in the lusophone projects that prevent or hinder the entry and permanence of new and veteran editors, readers and researchers of the Wikimedia projects in Portuguese. A complete list of the proposals by the Wiki Movement Brazil can be accessed here
WMB has began addressing the Lusophone Technological Wish list proposals under outreachy27 by tackling the proposal with the most priority up-votes; developing a tool that lists pages with broken Links. With this tool, Wikimedia editors will be able to identify pages that have missing external links and also improve external references by providing more useful Links. The tool will first be used on English and Portuguese Wikipedia and will later be localized for use in other Wikipedia supported Languages to benefit all Wikipedia editors
While working on this project for the past month, I've learnt a ton about how Wikipedia works. I've had a chance to understand and work with Media Wiki - the software that runs on Wikipedia and also improve my coding knowledge through solving these challenges.
I am excited to Work on this project because each of the proposals is unique and requires a different approach to solving the challenge. I am also excited to work with my mentors who are experienced Wikimedians to contribute to Wikimedia's goal of disseminating free knowledge globally.
